Saving the top tier of your wedding cake

Why save your cake?

Traditionally speaking, the top tier of a wedding cake is often saved and preserved to be eaten once again at your one-year anniversary. More commonly, there’s sentiment and the superstition of good luck and prosperity that is believed to occur when couples enjoy a piece of their cake one year later.

Keep the tradition alive by following the steps below. Doing so will ensure that your cake tastes just as amazing the second time around. When the eve of your joyous one year anniversary arrives, you and your spouse will be able to toast to another year filled with happiness and good fortune.

How to preserve the top of your wedding cake

  1. Immediately following the wedding, place (or have someone else place) the top tier of the cake in the freezer for a few hours to freeze the outer layer of icing.
  2. Loosely wrap the entire cake with freezer-safe plastic wrap. Cover every inch of cake with the plastic wrap ensuring that no area remains exposed. This will help ward off the dreaded freezer burn.
  3. Once wrapped, place the tier into a cake box which you can obtain from either a local craft store, or ask us to provide you one ahead of time.
  4. Wrap the cake box in the same plastic wrap to seal it from moisture, air, etc.
  5. Finally, place the box in the back of the freezer for safekeeping.

Groom's Cake

What’s a Groom’s Cake? Traditionally its a gift from the bride to the groom that reflects his personality and interests in his favorite cake flavors. The Groom’s Cake can be displayed next to the wedding cake or be served at the rehearsal dinner the night before. We think its such a fun touch to surprise your fiancé! We suggest leaving the cake out on display for a while before serving.
